Adequate housing fosters family integration, contributes to social equity and strengthens the feeling of belonging, which is essential for the well-being of mankind. Human settlement conditions in many parts of the world, particularly the developing countries, are deteriorating mainly as a result of the low levels of investment coupled with lack of access to knowledge, technologies and skills,
which in turn affect the poor for whom the need for shelter is most acute.
Shelter
related appropriate technology have potential of
becoming prime movers in rural livelihoods and
there is still considerable scope to reduce cost
and improve the quality of technologies currently
in use.
